Free Verse: Bitter-Cold Baths

A free verse poetry, “Bitter-cold Baths.”

It’s amazing how life can be of extremes, on the one hand, some have it simple. On the other extreme, such as myself growing up, life was one challenge after another. My parents took everything in stride and made the best of it. In turn, I’ve learned to do the same, each and every challenge a learning lesson. Giving strength to my core of being. Sharing a free verse poetry and digital art piece of appreciation of life.

Bitter-Cold Baths

Cold, frigid water has no heart.
An old aluminum horse trough either.
Old man Winter laughed.
When he sneezed, flurries chased each other.
I, at seven, remember baths in aluminum.
Mother, pouring heated hot water.
My teeth made music.
Chatter. Chatter. Chatter.
The water went from cold to warm.
Then warm to cold within minutes.
I bathe quickly.
Jumping out-embraced by a scruffy towel.
I ran into the house—welcoming
a crackling fire in a fireplace.
A pot on the top of the old cook stove,
talked to my rumbling tummy.
I pulled an oversized shirt
over frozen sticks of hair.
And a pair of half frozen jeans over skinny legs.
I hate bitter-cold baths.
They made me whom I am today!
All those goose bumps I remember,
but the warm fire and hot soup would erase.
Bitter-Cold baths.

  1. This reminds me of stories my daddy told growing up. They lived in a one room log cabin for awhile as a child on the edge of the Ozarks in Arkansas and actually, for about a year my daddy, mama, little sister and I did too. We soon moved to California and stayed in low income housing….daddy became a logger. Great post…
